Post 16 Dress Code
The Post‑16 dress code at John Taylor Free School reflects the high standards expected of students as senior members of the school community.
Sixth Form students are expected to dress in a professional and appropriate way, setting a positive example for younger students and preparing for life beyond school.
While there is no logoed uniform, the expectation is for business‑style dress suitable for a professional environment.
If you are unsure about any items, we recommend checking with the school before purchasing. Final decisions regarding whether clothing meets the dress code rest with the Post‑16 team and Headteacher.
Our Expectations
The aim of the dress code is to create a smart, professional environment where all students feel confident and prepared for the wider world.
What to Wear
The guidance below outlines what is expected for day‑to‑day dress in Post‑16.
- A dark‑coloured blazer must be worn
- Shirts or blouses should be smart, with sleeves, and tucked in
- Ties must be worn with shirts and fastened to the top button
- A plain V‑neck jumper may be worn under a blazer in colder weather
- Hoodies, branded sweatshirts and casual tops are not permitted
- Smart suit trousers, skirts or dresses should be worn
- Skirts and dresses should be suitable for a professional setting and no shorter than knee‑length
- Stretch or Lycra‑style skirts are not permitted
- Shoes should be dark and leather‑style
- Trainers, sandals, sliders and similar casual footwear are not permitted
- Socks or tights, if worn, should be plain dark or neutral colours and free from holes
Appearance and personal presentation
Students are expected to present themselves in a way that reflects the standards of the Post‑16 community.
- Jewellery may be worn, but should be appropriate and not excessive
- Stud earrings are permitted
- Facial piercings (including nose or tongue) and visible tattoos are not permitted
- Hair should be neat and tidy at all times
- Extreme styles are not permitted
- Hair colour should be within a natural range
- A hijab or turban may be worn and should be plain black
- Items must not cover the face or uniform
- Please contact the school if alternative arrangements are required for religious reasons
- Post‑16 students must wear their ID badge and school lanyard at all times
- The badge should be clearly visible while on the school site
If dress does not meet expectations, students may be asked to borrow an appropriate item for the day. Any issues are expected to be addressed by the following school day.
