Helping students learn beyond the classroom
At John Taylor Free School, we see Extended Learning (homework) as an important part of students’ education. Well-designed Extended Learning gives students opportunities to practise, consolidate and extend what they have learned in lessons, while also helping them develop the independence and study habits they will need as they progress through school and beyond.
Our Approach
Our approach is based on six key principles that we believe make Extended Learning most effective:
Purposeful
We value quality over quantity. Extended Learning will have a clear purpose and should link meaningfully to what students are learning in the classroom. Activities are designed to reinforce important knowledge and skills rather than simply provide additional work.
Informative
Students should understand what they are being asked to do and why. Instructions and expectations will be clear, with teachers providing appropriate feedback so that students understand what they have done well and how they can improve.
Accessible
We recognise that students have different circumstances and needs. We will consider potential barriers to completing Extended Learning, including access to appropriate technology, resources or a suitable working environment, and provide support where needed.
Developing INdependence
Extended Learning is an opportunity for students to develop the skills needed to become independent learners. Teachers will explicitly support students in developing effective approaches to revision, organisation, research and completing tasks independently.
Inspiring
We want Extended Learning to encourage students to take an interest in their subjects and extend their knowledge. Where appropriate, tasks will provide opportunities for students to explore ideas beyond the classroom, make connections and develop their understanding.
Monitored
Extended Learning should make a difference to learning. Teachers and departments will monitor completion, engagement and the impact of activities over time. This helps us identify what is working well and where approaches may need to be adapted.
How Can Parents and Carers Help?
Parents and carers have an important role in supporting Extended Learning. You can help by:
- encouraging your child to establish a regular routine for completing work
- helping them find a quiet space where possible
- asking them to explain what they are learning
- encouraging them to complete tasks independently rather than doing the work for them
- helping them plan their time when they have several deadlines
- contacting the school if there are significant barriers preventing your child from completing their work
Our aim is for Extended Learning to be purposeful, manageable and valuable – supporting students to remember more, understand more and become increasingly confident and independent learners.
