Student Leadership
At John Taylor Free School, we believe students should have the opportunity to lead, contribute and make a positive difference. Our Student Leadership programme gives young people opportunities to represent the school, support their peers, lead projects and help shape school life.
Leadership is not simply about holding a title. It is about being dependable, listening to others, setting a positive example and taking action when opportunities arise. Through leadership roles and experiences, students develop confidence, responsibility and skills that will support them throughout their education and beyond.
Through these experiences, students develop the self-belief, communication, teamwork, organisation and leadership skills that will benefit them well beyond their time at JTFS.
Why Student Leadership Matters
Student Leadership provides opportunities for young people to:
- Have their voices heard.
- Represent their peers.
- Contribute ideas and feedback.
- Support younger students.
- Organise activities and events.
- Develop confidence, communication and teamwork skills.
Just as importantly, it helps students understand that leadership is about service, responsibility and making a positive contribution to the wider community. Many of the skills developed through Student Leadership are highly valued in Post-16 education, universities, apprenticeships and future employment.
Leadership Opportunities
There are many ways for students to become involved in leadership at JTFS.
Head Students and Deputy Head Students
Our Head Students and Deputy Head Students represent the student body and act as ambassadors for the school. They work closely with staff, support key events and help ensure student views are heard.
House Captains and Vice Captains
House Captains and Vice Captains help organise inter-house activities, promote participation and support fundraising for House charities throughout the year.
School Council Representatives
School Council Representatives gather ideas and feedback from their peers, contribute to discussions and help communicate outcomes back to students.
Student Leaders
Student Leaders support events, projects and initiatives across the school, helping to create a positive and vibrant school community.
Sports Ambassadors
Student Leaders support events, projects and initiatives across the school, helping to create a positive and vibrant school community.
Year 12 Mentors
Post-16 students who provide support, encouragement and guidance to younger pupils through mentoring and positive role modelling.
Student Leadership in Action
Leadership at JTFS extends far beyond meetings and titles.
Throughout the year, students have opportunities to:
- Welcome visitors and prospective families at Open Evenings.
- Support transition events for new students.
- Organise charity fundraising activities.
- Help run enrichment and celebration events.
- Represent student voice through leadership groups and consultation activities.
- Support sporting events and community initiatives.
- Work alongside staff on projects that improve school life.
These experiences allow students to put leadership skills into practice and see the positive impact they can have on others.
Skills for the Future
Leadership experiences help students develop skills that are valuable in school, further education and future employment. Through representing their peers, organising activities and working alongside staff, students strengthen their communication, teamwork and leadership abilities. They learn how to manage responsibilities, solve problems, work collaboratively and take initiative, while also developing the confidence and professionalism needed in a wide range of future pathways.
Recent Highlights
Student Leaders played an important role in a range of activities during the last academic year.
Most notably, they helped organise and run activities at the JTFS Summer Fair, including the water fight, football penalty shoot-out, tuck shop, sponge-a-teacher, face painting and glitter tattoos.
Their contribution helped the Summer Fair raise over £2000 for the school and House charities.
Student Leaders also supported reward activities, sporting events, student voice initiatives and wider community events throughout the year.
Getting Involved
We believe effective leaders come in many different forms. Students do not need to be the loudest voice in the room to make a positive contribution. The most successful Student Leaders are often those who are reliable, positive, approachable and willing to step forward when opportunities arise.
Leadership opportunities are advertised throughout the year through assemblies, tutor time and school communications. Students are invited to apply for roles by explaining their interest and the qualities they can bring. Depending on the position, this may involve an application, interview, discussion or presentation. Successful students receive guidance, support and clear expectations before taking on their role and becoming actively involved in projects, events and leadership activities across the school.

Student Leadership gives students the opportunity to contribute to school life, represent their peers and help shape the wider JTFS community. Whether supporting an event, mentoring younger students, leading a project or sharing ideas through student voice activities, every role offers the chance to build confidence and make a meaningful contribution.
Opportunities become available throughout the year and are promoted through assemblies, tutor time and school communications. We encourage all students with a positive attitude, a willingness to take responsibility and a commitment to representing JTFS well to consider getting involved.
