Extended Curriculum
Enrichment at John Taylor Free School
Enrichment is a key part of life at John Taylor Free School. Alongside the curriculum, our enrichment programme encourages students to try new activities, develop skills, build confidence and explore interests beyond the classroom. Our wraparound enrichment programme offers a wide range of activities before school, at lunchtime and after school, updated on a termly basis.
Students also benefit from trips, visiting speakers and ‘pop‑up’ opportunities that broaden their experiences and understanding of the wider world.
Why Enrichment Matters
Enrichment helps students develop confidence, independence and a sense of belonging within the school community. It supports wellbeing, builds friendships and encourages students to challenge themselves in new and different ways.
We encourage all students to take part in enrichment activities as part of a balanced and fulfilling school experience.
Enrichment Activities
Students can take part in a wide range of enrichment activities before school, at lunchtime and after school, with opportunities updated each term.
Activities are designed to fit around the school day, giving students the flexibility to choose those that interest them and get involved regularly. Details of current activities are shared in school each term.

Trips, Visits and Speakers
Students take part in a range of educational visits and experiences that bring learning to life beyond the classroom. From subject‑specific trips to wider cultural opportunities, these experiences help students see the relevance of their learning and create lasting memories during their time at school.
Information, payments and consent for trips are all managed through MCAS.
Community and Partnerships
We work with local organisations, clubs and businesses to provide experiences that extend learning beyond the classroom and connect students with the wider community. Through these partnerships, students gain access to opportunities that support personal development, build wider connections and help them explore future pathways.
Duke of Edinburgh Award
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award offers students the opportunity to challenge themselves, develop new skills and gain valuable experiences beyond the classroom. Through volunteering, physical activity, skills development and expeditions, participants build confidence, resilience and independence while working towards a nationally recognised award.
Students develop teamwork, leadership and problem-solving skills, while also strengthening future applications for Post‑16 study, university, apprenticeships and employment.
