Choosing what comes next after Year 11 is an important decision. At John Taylor Free School, Post‑16 offers the opportunity to study subjects you enjoy, develop greater independence and take advantage of a wide range of opportunities beyond the classroom.
Alongside lessons, students have access to dedicated Post‑16 facilities, study spaces and enrichment opportunities, helping them make the most of their time with us and prepare for their next steps after Post‑16.

Every Post‑16 experience is different, but students consistently tell us they value the balance of independence and support available at JTFS.
From flexible subject combinations and dedicated Post‑16 facilities to personalised guidance and a wide range of opportunities beyond the classroom, Post‑16 is designed to help students achieve their goals while making the most of their final years in education.
No two weeks in Post‑16 are exactly the same. Alongside taught lessons, students have study periods throughout the week, giving them time to work independently, complete wider reading, prepare coursework and consolidate learning.
Wednesdays follow a slightly different timetable, with lessons finishing at 3:05pm rather than 3:20pm. The afternoon includes a timetabled enrichment session running from 1:25pm to 3:05pm, providing opportunities to develop new skills, gain valuable experiences and explore interests beyond their academic studies.
Students are encouraged to take increasing ownership of their learning, while knowing that support is always available when needed.
Post‑16 students benefit from facilities designed to support both study and social time throughout the day.
Students have access to a dedicated Post‑16 Room, a quiet study room and the Learning Resource Centre, allowing them to choose the environment that best suits the task they are working on. Whether revising independently, completing coursework or working collaboratively, a range of spaces is available to support different learning styles.
The Post‑16 Room also includes an exclusive catering facility, offering a wider range of food and drink options alongside those available in the main school restaurant. Students who drive to school may also use the designated Post‑16 car park.
One of the biggest differences between Year 11 and Post‑16 is the increased opportunity for independent study. Alongside lessons, students have timetabled study periods which can be used to review learning, complete assignments, carry out wider reading or prepare for assessments.
These periods help students develop the organisation, self‑management and study skills needed for success in Post‑16 and beyond. Students are encouraged to make effective use of their time, while staff remain available to provide guidance and support whenever it is needed.
Life in Post‑16 extends beyond lessons and study periods. Throughout the year, students can take part in a wide range of opportunities including enrichment activities, educational visits, leadership roles and experiences designed to support their future aspirations.
Whether pursuing a particular career pathway, developing new interests or building skills for university, apprenticeships or employment, there are many ways for students to get involved and make the most of their time in Post‑16.
