English and Modern Foreign Languages
Words have the power to inspire, persuade, entertain and connect. Through English, French and Spanish, students explore how language shapes the way we communicate, understand others and express our ideas.
Whether studying literature, developing writing skills or communicating in another language, students are encouraged to think critically, communicate confidently and engage with the rich variety of cultures and perspectives that make up our world.
Subjects within this Faculty
English
English combines the study of language and literature, helping students become confident readers, writers and communicators. Through a diverse range of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and drama, students explore ideas, perspectives and experiences while developing the analytical and communication skills that support learning across the curriculum.
Throughout Key Stage 3, students explore a rich range of literary and non-fiction texts while developing the reading, writing and analytical skills that underpin success across the curriculum. This foundation prepares students for further study of GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature in Years 10 and 11.
French
French opens the door to new cultures, perspectives and ways of communicating. Students develop their ability to understand and use the language in a variety of practical contexts while exploring the traditions and customs of French-speaking countries.
As their confidence grows, students learn to express their ideas with increasing accuracy and independence. Developing strong communication skills and cultural understanding helps prepare students to engage with an increasingly connected world.
Spanish
As one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, Spanish gives students the opportunity to engage with a rich and diverse range of cultures. Lessons encourage curiosity about the wider world while developing the skills needed to interpret, understand and communicate meaning effectively.
Learning Spanish allows students to engage with a language spoken by millions of people around the world. As their understanding grows, students become increasingly confident in communicating ideas, interpreting meaning and exploring the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries.
Key Stage 4 Revision Resources
Strong performance in language-based subjects is built through regular practice, thoughtful revision and exposure to a wide range of texts and vocabulary. These resources provide additional support for students preparing for assessments and examinations.
