Be More Kind…

Starting the year with kindness

“Be more kind my friend, it’s time to be more kind”

This is a quote from Frank Turner’s 2018 album and written at a time when the world seemed to more divisive than cohesive.  This resonated with me following the events of the summer where we saw communities in turmoil following the riots.

During assemblies, I have, of course, been talking about the importance of “Turn Up” and “Work Hard” but the main message has been about “Be Nice” – it is so easy that everyone can do it!

Our JTFS community is rich and diverse with many different languages, faiths and backgrounds and it is something that I really value in our school.  When I talked to the students about what happened over the summer, I spent more time talking about those communities who chose kindness over hate and community spirit over division. I asked them to think about what their actions say about their character and how they treat others. Simple gestures, such as please, thank you, holding the door and helping someone who needs it, make all the difference to those around us.

I want our young people to recognise that the choices they make, they need to own and know why they act in the way they do.  Self-discipline, integrity and having a strong moral compass are all essential attributes for a community which supports all of its’ members to succeed and thrive.

I finished with this:

As the world fights among themselves, I’ll be the person who smiles and bids strangers good morning.  I’ll be the one who holds doors open and lets people out at the junction.  I’ll be the one entertaining babies as they wait in the queue with their caregivers.  I’ll be the one buying a sandwich for the person sat outside the supermarket with the total belongings surrounding them.  I’ll be the one offering to help someone struggling or in need.

Why? Because what the world needs right now is kindness.  If you can’t see kindness – be kindness

And if you haven’t listened to Frank’s “Be More Kind” – it is worth a few minutes of your time!
